As frustrating and sad as those two things were, there were several highlights to the weekend. Up there among them was this exciting event---bone retrieval. I know this is one crummy group picture, but I wanted to show you the gang of crazies humoring me and my odd requests.
Let me back up. I expressed to my sweet hubby that we should have a bone yard in the park area of Galloping Grace. In my mind, children who are not riding would love to play with bones of dead animals. Swing a little, play some tether ball, and then try and determine which part went to which animal. Do times get any better?
I think I am on to something here. After visiting some caves one afternoon (another post for a different day), Max drove us all to the mecca of bovine bones! Apparently six cows had died within a few hours of each other a while back for some unexplained reason. Wade Ranch's loss is Galloping Grace's gain. Bones galore!
We didn't have to ask the children twice to collect a few specimens.
This cute girl is Kylee.
She is the daughter of Jeff and Stacy, some very dear friends of ours we do not get to see near often enough. They live in Clovis, NM--too far away from Albuquerque! We enjoy meeting up at the ranch which is a good half way point between our homes. Kylee was ready and willing to get her hands dirty!
Not to be outdone by his sister in the bone handling department, I present Kannon.
I'm pretty sure Kannon had a blast.
And this boy releasing a lot of pent up aggression with a pair of rib bones is Kabel, their middle child.
Middle children need an outlet--I just sensed that. I should write a book...I could fill it with clever ideas for bettering the world. Cow parts would definitely have their own chapter.
This pile of still baking cow was not quite ready for us. I'd say we give that one a fair amount of time before handling. Blech.
Hank LOVED this field trip. There were no parts too raw for him. Again, I would not encourage any of you to allow him to kiss your face.
Trish found a cutie.

Claire had some fun with back bones.
And teeth were a hot commodity.
Parents could be seen popping them out of jaws for appreciate children.
I'd say we got enough for now. Thank you all for the impressive haul. :) I'll make sure to post pictures of the bone yard once we have it set up.
Max and Michelle--providing superior entertainment for the masses.
Jeff, Stacy, Kylee, Kabel and Kannon--it was such a pleasure seeing you. Let's not wait so long next time.
We love you guys.

The rib bone connected the 'bone with the still rotting, stinkin' flesh all over it'....ewwww!
Such a science related visit, eh?
So will you be building a bovine dig (sort of like a dino dig) at GGYR, complete with little shovels, mini-brooms and toothbrushes?
Prizes for the most teeth found?

I love the way Lisa thinks. And a chart of which bones goes where.
Going out to the big ranch gives the kids a chance to be kids. They get to be outside, climbing all over stuff, exploring, shooting at things (never at other kids). And I don’t think I ever heard any of them fighting. It’s great! It’s like the weight of the world is left behind at the first gate after you leave the black top. To tell the truth, I don’t know who has more fun, the little kids, or the big kids. I know that my big kid (who‘s in his 40s and stands over 6ft) loves going out to the big ranch playing and getting dirty. And one of my favorite things besides the sound of the kids laughing and having fun, is that there isn’t cell service. Everyone needs to find a little piece of heaven here on earth.
I always knew there was something off about you guys....now I know where it comes from!!! Looks like fun and I'm sure my 5 will agree when they play in the bone yard. I'll be sitting with you taking pictures, thank you very much.
I have to wonder if me bones will be more of a prize after I am gone and I can't help to wonder why when visiting the ranch I was encouraged to take a long walk in a certain direction. "You don't need to take any water, high noon is the best time to walk there, the walkie talkies won't reach in that area, but not to worry..." No, my son-in-law knows I get lost in my back yard, he wouldn't???
That is one, awesome idear right there. My kids would be entertained for HOURS with those things. Weird kids.
I love your idea, I will have to go out collecting myself. We might have a hard time finding teeth though!
That is so cool! We have a tub of old cow bones at my school. The kids love looking at them. Last year I had one of the parents come and talk about bones with the kids (he is a doctor) and he was fascinated by the cowbones, trying to guess what all of the parts were! ;) I always love visiting you guys over here, always something interesting goin' on! Have a happy Easter weekend!
That is one big heap of bones! If you put them all together, just think of the creature you could make!
That is pretty cool for the kiddos! They looked like they had fun playing with the bones!
I have alot of bones in my backyard but of another variety. I have always called it the boneyard...mice, moles, shrews, birds and baby bunnies! Morgan the cat brings everything home! Oh and deer bones, this is from one of my dogs. So much fun!
Yup, you guys have a different definition of entertainment than we city folks do. :)
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
should I say more???
Just kidding! Looks fun!
