Lemon Removal

Quick little post wishing Trish a most successful surgery tomorrow (Friday) morning. I know Barb requested pictures of the nodule removed from Trish's thyroid, but I don't think Trish was having that. Plus, I'm not quite sure her surgeon would be so keen on the idea. Instead, I'll post sometime after the surgery to let you all know how she's doing.

I'm know she'd love any prayers you'd throw up for her.

Happy Friday to you all.

Doctor said the surgery was a success. Trish is now the proud owner of one half of a thyroid. Hopefully, it will do its job and she will not require medication. Thanks for all the prayers. I'm sure she and her family appreciate them all.

All The Fuss About Pus

Dan asked for an update on Black. Here goes:

We thought Black, a 32 year old gelding, was on his way out several months ago. He had a nasty, putrid tooth/sinus infection he could not shake no matter how many antibiotics were inserted into his, um, horse's rear. As a board, we agonized on what to do with poor Black. He was not fit to ride. He most likely wasn't feeling well and he smelled like nobody's business! One brush up against Black and a person's shirt was nasty-stinky! BUT, we all realized what a good horse he had been lifetime and to GGYR specifically. He was one of the first horses used in any situation.

After months of trying to get rid of his infection, Max was ready to throw in the towel. It came to that point where we were pumping hundreds of dollars of medication into him with no results. Every member of the board agreed that we would not be using GGYR's money wisely if we continued to treat a horse that would not improve.

Max called the vet and told her the decision. She asked to do one last ditch procedure (about $400) to see if it would help. We all agreed that would be the last. After that, we would have to let nature run its course.

Black spent a few days at the clinic after having a tooth extracted. (I heard the vet had saved the tooth for me so that I could take a picture for the blog!) The doctor said he was an ideal patient and things went as well as could be expected.

We are a couple months out now. Black is a new horse! He went from being Mr. Stinky Oozy Drippy Head to a happy, healthy ol' guy.
I bet he felt so fortunate he was well enough give rides and wear reindeer antlers at the Christmas Corral. Isn't that every horse's greatest ambition? Max and Tim joked about how humiliated the poor horses were with those on their heads. I guess every time Cochise found a way to tear his off before making it back to GGYR. Tim's theory was that Cochise had a reputation to uphold as the alpha horse. Reindeer antlers DID NOT fit his tough guy act so he refused to be seen like that.

There you have it, Dan. Black is doing well and appreciates your concern.

Dan, yours truly appreciates the blog inspiration. Thanks for helping a sister out! And look, I'm posting before midnight!

Hey Roy, Happy You're-Now-As-Old-As-I-Am Birthday to you!!! No more cracks about my old age, old man. We love you.

So Tell Me

In jury duty news, Max's services were not needed today nor were they requested for Wednesday. Oh how this makes my fingers and toes rejoice! They, like me, have no cold tolerance.

Months and months we've been waiting for the City of Rio Rancho to approve the plans submitted by the engineers for the water line to our property. Max got news today that the city is in the final stages of the process. Finally, finally! Hopefully we can get rolling on all of it soon.

So I know I'm the queen of telling you I'll post about something and then never doing it. Are there any stories where I left you hanging? I can think of a few, but I sit here hoping you've forgotten those particular ones. Let me know and I'm sure to get right on those.

Have a good one.

Feeding In The Frozen Tundra

Max had several hours to himself, even visiting the courthouse deli while I pounded ten inch thick slabs of ice.

Max happily contemplated what to do with worms (his mistress if you'll recall)and composting while I fed five bales of hay.

Max watched the news in a warm room while I tried to turn on the water valve to no avail. FROZEN!

Max analyzed the pumpkin stand (his other mistress!) expense sheet and thought of ways to include sponsors for next season while I made a trip back out to the ranch in hopes that the faucet had thawed.

Ahh, the life of a rancher's wife--at least during jury duty.

For the record, I'm happy to help out for a change. I just cannot pass up a chance to gripe when an opportunity presents itself so nicely.

Renee, now it's your turn for a birthday! See what I mean, readers--I know so many people with birthdays! Nee, Happy Happy Birthday to you! Thanks for all you do.

The Slacker

Remember back when I had jury duty? What a relaxing two weeks of my life that was. I got to sit there reading my People magazine (don't be hating--quality reading material) for hours at a time with not a care in the world.

Monday morning Cowboy Max gets to go have his fun. He gets to do it for three weeks instead of my two. Figures. Pretty convenient on his part to pull duty during the freezing cold time of year. Now the feeding falls to me. Ah, the humanity.

So tell me-- if horses are slightly plump, should they really be fed every day?

Just wondering.

Tristan--Happy Birthday, sweet niece. Love you.
Mom--thanks for being the greatest mama in the whole world! Happy Birthday to you! I love you.

No need to post on the weekends. That's what my mama used to say.

Hope yours is a good one.

Misha, sorry I didn't call today. Hope your birthday was super happy! Love you.

Terrific Trish

I've been trying to keep my birthday shout-outs simple as of late. Like I said at some point last year, it seems like everyone I know has a birthday! Just crazy.

I figured since a certain person is such a HUGE part of the success of GGYR, she might deserve a bit more.

Dearest Volunteer Coordinator, Waiver Copier/Typer, Scheduler, Treasurer--Bill Payer, Check Writer, Bank Depositor, Session Facilitator, Tree Unloader, Pumpkin Chucker, Candy Cane Purchaser, Gingerbread House Painter, Poop Scooper, Hay Bucker, Water Hauler, Medicine Giver, Newsletter Writer, Event Planner, Pumpkin Seller, Field Trip Coordinator, etc., etc., and Great Friend--
Happy Birthday!

As our gift to you, why don't you take the whole day off!

No really, we insist.

Doggin' It

Thanks for all the nifty comments last night. You people sure know how to feed a gal's soul.

We had a board meeting tonight for GGYR. What a legit not-for-profit we are, huh? We sure appreciate Misha, Trish, Tim and Barb taking time out of their lives serving with us. Thanks especially to Trish for all the financial reports she prepared. Just seeing her pass the paperwork over me to Misha to put in the secretary book made me cringe. UGH.

I learned something interesting about Tim tonight. It turns out he's a bit of a bounty hunter at heart. Trish brought up one returned check (from all the pumpkin sales and tree sales) that she has not been able to collect funds. The lady has not returned four calls from Trish. Upon
hearing this news, Tim's face lit up. He is the manager at a mechanic shop in town. If they have any checks returned for insufficient funds and then do not receive another payment, Tim finds a way to collect. He said in all his years doing this, he has only had one customer not pay--a man who died. Sad story, but what an impressive record for Tim. I can bet we'll be getting our $111 soon. Tim said one time his boss announced that he didn't think they should accept checks any more. Tim quickly wondered what he'd do for fun.
It's amazing the opportunities having a youth ranch is providing for us. Before we know it, we'll be costarring in Tim's very own show as a bounty hunter. We look at it as something to do in the off months. Cowboys Max and Tim take on Albquerque/Rio Rancho.

I can imagine the blog posts now. . .

The Gigantic Slump

Out of material. Don't know what to say. Really--I mean it this time! Max is sitting right behind me being absolutely worthless! Shouldn't he kick in a few ideas from time to time? I mean really. If this were my personal blog I could discuss:

  • How we finally cleaned our garage! Oh happy day. My vehicle now fits. Even better, we can actually walk through it without fear of falling.
  • I'm so happy American Idol is back on. So far, I'm not missing Paula and I really thought I would. I know I won't be able to handle Simon leaving. Call me lame for loving the show. I can't help it. And so you know, Max is also a fan.
  • My camera woes. I suppose I could do that here. Some of you might care.
  • How I went from being worst driver ever after only a few tries playing Mario Kart to stomping Max last night. Life is good! What a fun game. We're not big fans of video games for the children, but that game is FUN! And what great parents we are getting them used to hazardous driving conditions in the safety of their own living room. Might I also had how amazingly precious Grant (4) is playing this game. Cute stuff!
  • How happy I am my mom made it back after her two week working vacation.
Until next time when I'll probably have even less to say.

Piled High

Our poop picnic was loads of fun! There is something about eating food outside that makes it taste that much better. After our healthy hot dogs were eaten, we needed something sweet. We dug into the two bags of licorice and then typical debate started--Twizzlers or Red Vines? If you are my friend on facebook, you might remember I used to be squarely on Team Twizzler. Some how over the last couple years, I have absolutely-without-a-doubt switched to Red Vines. I will never understand what happened. In case you just have to know, there was only one Team Twizzler out of five women.

The whole day wasn't spent eating. We were actually very productive! We got the big storage trailer organized. It was an absolute disaster. Max had just shoved stuff inside after the pumpkin and tree stands. Poor guy was crazy busy and didn't have time to properly arrange. Thanks to Steph, Melissa, Trish, Dena and myself it was looking pretty good.

After the storage trailer, we hit the tack room. Another giant sense of accomplishment when that was done. What was an un-walkable mess became a nicely organized space. Thanks, Trish and Dena. We did great on that!

Max assigned Roy and Beth the job of removing a hay pyramid that was situated by the picnic area. It brought a lot of joy to children this past summer, but it was time for it to be taken down. Oldie moldy mess! Beth, Dena, Roy, Steph and Melissa got it cleaned up in a hurry. I helped a bit myself. I have mold happily settling into my lungs as I type. Melissa is practicing her Karate Kid moves here. Garrett and Spencer helped haul the mess to the manure pile. Don't you love to see children working away? It feeds my soul. I raced them (and won) a wagon full which really sparked their competitive juices. Whatever it takes. Brooke, Spencer and Garrett also helped Max haul a few tables around this morning.

I didn't talk much about the poop part of the picnic. Max decided it has built up so much he is going to use a tractor for the big pen. He sure knows how to kill a good work out. I think he just wanted the rest of us to organize the two things he dreaded most instead of scooping. I'm on to that man and his trickery.

The weather was fantastic and the company even better. Thanks to the whole crew for your help today. We appreciate you so much!

Carlos C., happiest of birthdays to you. I cannot believe you are now officially a teenager!! We love you, buddy.

The Lizard Hunters

From this summer--because I like it.

You want to hear something different? Let me know--I'll be here waiting for your responses. (All two of them.)

Dear bro-in-law Christian, happiest of birthdays to you! Wish we could take you to dinner to celebrate.

Jolly Stuff

So I never told you about. . .

What a gripe-y baby Santa Max was this year. Seriously, he held down the gig for maybe an hour and a half ONE day. I got a few pictures of his visit to the Christmas Corral, but not many. I guess Jack should consider himself lucky to have been seen with the less than jolly fellow.
Melissa and Nick stopped by the stand on the way to a holiday party.

Do you not agree they rocked those adorable holiday sweaters?! Tacky city. (Only because I should think that, not because I do.) Another picture of that Santa fellow, this time with three children I just adore.
Would you just look at Cashton being rotten with Santa's hat? Happy birthday to Coulter, the little guy on his lap. We love you, buddy.

I don't know if I've introduced you all to one of Max's brothers, Terry.

Terry is an ultra cool FBI agent with the driest, most hilarious sense of humor around. Oh, and he and his wife Hope are very generous to Galloping Grace. That could almost make me feel bad how easy it is for me to whip him at most games. (Please, someone buy him ping pong lessons next Christmas!)

You know, Trish does a lot of wonderful things for GGYR. That is why I am going to have to look the other way. She was awfully hands on with Santa. (Not Max!) Every time I looked, she was tucking a shirt in here or grabbing a beard there. Very inappropriate.
Please, no one tell her husband Chase.

I'll leave you with one of those humiliated horses giving a ride to a most precious Alex girl. Until next time.

We have clearly entered the time of year at GGYR where I have to scape the bottom of the barrel to write a post. I wanted to publicly fess up to that fact since I'm sure you've noticed. This would be a dandy time for all those guest posts to come pouring in.

Perhaps tomorrow I will do more barrel-scraping for your reading amusement. But tonight, I'm off to bed.

Heidi (and Kurt?), thanks for feeding again. How wonderful are you volunteering to feed every Tuesday to give Max a break! We appreciate that so much.

Happy 29th (she said so) to my mother-in-law, Donna!

If The Ring Fits

Today was a special day for Melissa, one of our volunteers and friends, and Derik, her fiance. They got married! It was such a pleasure to be in attendance. I tell you what, brides don't get any more excited than Melissa. She was so very laid back about the details and just plain giddy to be there. Derik was equally happy, just in a calmer way. Whatever. However. It just didn't matter to them. All they cared about was getting officially hitched. So what the courthouse only holds weddings on Fridays--the park was available for their vowing pleasure. As the ceremony was about to begin, Max and I suggested they scoot over here and stand over there in our attempts at getting a better picture. Melissa walked where directed and promptly fell on the icy sidewalk. She got up laughing, still happy as could be. I love the smiles on both their faces.
Their first kiss as man and wife. Cute, huh?
They are planning a bigger ceremony in September. Today was about making it official. Official it is!

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. R! May your marriage be as happy and fun as your wedding ceremony was. We love you guys.

Band Of Brothers

Readers that have been with this blog for the long haul, you probably remember all the pictures of our dog Hank when he was a puppy. What an adorable creature he was!

Jason and Cindy, former GGYR volunteers before they so rudely moved, really liked Hank. Since they were in the market for a new golden, they were excited to learn Hank's breeders were selling more puppies. (Apparently, Hank's mom has been around the block a few times.) Jason and Cindy got their very own adorably precious fur ball. One day this past summer, they brought their little Riley out to meet his big bro. Hank was friendly, but aloof. He had to play it cool with the kid.
Riley just wanted a little love. It was only months before Hank was acting the same way. I think he saw what was coming.

Puppy pile!
Love hurts.

Hank, will you always be my big brother?
Well Riley, I wish I could say yes. In a couple short months your owners are going to whisk you away to some overly humid state to live the remainder of your days. This one day will be our only chance to bond.
Be a good boy and enjoy the ocean for me. I'm going to stay here and chase jackrabbits and roll in horse poop.

And so it was, their only day to know one another. I hate to leave you with a sad ending like this. If you find yourself disappointed, please feel free to blame Jason and Cindy. It is their fault.

The End.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Some days just kick you in your gut. Please keep the prayers coming our way. Also, our dear friend and volunteer, Betty, is experiencing extremely painful shingles. She is such a great lady--please pray for her healing.

I'm calling it quits on this January 7th day.

Goodnight.

Just A Quickie

Tonight I am heading to a sleep clinic with my drowsy son, so I won't be able to do my usual midnight posting. If you wouldn't mind, please say a prayer for happy news.

Becky, thanks for all the beautiful wreaths you donated to the Christmas Corral. They sold like hot cakes! We appreciate your time and talents.

Cowgirls Don't Cry

Usually.
Well, the cowgirls we have hanging around our family ranch are pretty immune to the process of branding a baby calf. So they get burned, banded, shot, etc.--what's the big deal? Jessie has been there and one that. Here she is getting her pour-on device ready. Brooke got to do ear tags for the first time. Yea, Brooke! You are definitely growing up. OK, so Claire was caught by Melissa's camera a little horrified watching her brother dehorn for the first time. Was it the horn being dug out of the skull or the technique her brother was using? I'm not sure. She's sound asleep in her bed so I can't ask her. She did have fun working a gate on the chute most of the morning.Cowgirl Kaley is pretty much like her mama. She wants in on the action and loves being a cowgirl. She often says, "Cowgirls don't cry, right mom?" On Sunday she had a field day whacking the calves as they came down the alley.
Bliss. In her element. Loving life. Precious.
Now meet Phoebe. Although she loves horses and riding, Sunday was her first day to witness what happens to a calf out on a ranch. I'm going to go out on a limb and say she wasn't impressed. She bawled and bawled watching the baby cows be worked. She finally started pleading to go home. Her only escape was the back of Max's pickup where Hank did his best to console the only way he knew how--
with doggie kisses to her teary face. Please, no one tell Phoebe how hamburgers are made. I don't think she could handle it right now. It's all so fresh--and burnt!

"Phoebe, thanks for caring about us. Wish the rest of those jokers did!"
